I am a game tester and i get asked all the time hows it like. well when i first wanted to become a video game tester myself i wondered what the job will entail. Yes its fun, but like all other jobs it requires some work. remember your not just play video games just to play. you are worrying for a company to test their product and try to discovery anything that was not meant to be in the final copy of the game, you are a part of a product team, not a player.
its easy to get caught up in the games gameplay and story, but you always have to remember your not a player, alot of people fail to realize that, if you end up getting caught in the game then you will do a poor job at finding what you are being paid for, chances are you will miss a ton of glitches and errors, and this is why game testers play the scenario multiply times over and over, this can get boring and tedious, but after you get used it you’ll start playing on a higher consioues level always asking yourself, “is this part of the design or an error?” once you get the hang of it you will spot errors efortlessly
working at home sound great, but you always have to stay on task always keep on task, why ? because you are working from your house, its extremely different then on office enviroment, you can easily get distrated by anything, phone, tv, wife, family, pets, and before you know it your day has come and gone, it may not sound that important but it is, you dont want to be one day from your deadline without doing much testing do you ? thats why you all ways got to stay on task and focused. its a job so you should treat it like one.
One might find himself tempted to just put off the testing, this is especially try if you find yourself testing a game that you don’t like, and don’t want to write your reports, if this happens you will fall behind bad, and if you miss your deadline, you can kiss your job goodbye or never be contacted by that employer ever again, take a day off if you need it but never let yourself get too distracted, you want money right ?
And most people who ask me is game testing all i do…. no its not all you do people hear the word game tester and instantly picture bum job, while you will spend hours in front of the tv, you will also spend hours writing alot, writing notes on anything you found went wrong, emailing the developers and other people at the office, writing is the most important part of this job, what good does it do you if you found bugs if you cant communicated correctly ? this is another job killer for alot of people
